A steel electrode is a consumable tool used in the welding of steel and other ferrous materials. It is a consumable because it is consumed in the process. The steel refers to the composition of the material being welded. The electrode may be solid, tubular or coated with flux and other additives for specific applications. Stainless steel welding electrodes have become popular in recent years as stainless steel has become more widely used in industrial applications. Less hydrogen means less arc stability, which results in poor arc starts and arc wander that reduce productivity, increase cycle times, increase weld distortion and cause porosity problems at heat affected zones (HAZs).
